Education

Educational Mission of Stony Brook Neurology

The Department of Neurology is dedicated to the outstanding education of our medical students, residents and fellows.

Our faculty contribute significantly to both the pre-clinical Neuroscience course (Mind, Brain and Behavior) and the Neurology Clerkship, in addition to resident education.

The Neurology Clerkship is a four-week required rotation with a variety of exposure to inpatient and outpatient neurology. Each year, quite a few of our students go on to match to residencies in Neurology. We like to think that this is in part due to the dedication of our faculty and residents in stimulating and exciting these students about neurology. Students from outside institutions are also invited to do an elective with us and see what Stony Brook Neurology has to offer. The department offers graduate medical education training opportunities as well. We have a categorical adult neurology residency program (6 residents per year) and a pediatric neurology residency program (1 resident per year). In addition, we offer three ACGME-accredited fellowships in Clinical Neurophysiology, Epilepsy and Vascular Neurology (Stroke), and additional fellowship opportunities in Multiple Sclerosis/Neuroimmunology. We also have an ACGME-accredited interdisciplinary Sleep Fellowship.

Many of our residents choose to stay at Stony Brook for fellowship, and many of our residents and fellows have remained at Stony Brook as faculty. We invite you to learn more about our department to find out why. Follow the links for more information about the Adult Residency, Child Residency and Fellowships offered by the department.

In addition to faculty dedication to teaching within our own departmental courses and clerkships, Neurology faculty members participate in teaching within our own courses, as well as medical student education in other courses such as Pharmacology, and in the education of other students such as Physician Assistant Students. Our faculty also contribute to the education of residents in a variety of other Stony Brook departments. Additionally, a number of our faculty members interview for Renaissance School of Medicine at Stony Brook University Admissions.

All our faculty are here because they love to teach.

Dr. Cara Harth, Vice-Chair of Education, is the recipient of the American Academy of Neurology's Clerkship Director's Teaching Award (2016) and the Stony Brook School of Medicine Excellence in Teaching Award (2016, 2018, 2019). In 2017, she was elected for membership by medical students to the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society by students.

We strive to get our students as excited about Neurology as we are!
